For SSI Pros

SSI instructor jobs worldwide

SSI instructor jobs are listed regularly on DiveGigs from dive shops, resorts and liveaboards that run SSI student kits and SSI training paths. SSI Open Water Instructors, AOWI, Dive Control Specialists and Divecons all find roles here, alongside cross-rated instructors who are willing to teach SSI curriculum.

Many SSI dive centres operate in regions where SSI is the dominant agency — parts of South East Asia, Germany and German-speaking Europe, the Mediterranean and the Maldives — though SSI roles appear globally. New SSI postings are added regularly. Browse the live listings below, or build a free profile to be notified when matching roles open.

What SSI dive centres usually look for in instructor candidates

Active SSI rating

Open Water Instructor minimum, AOWI or Dive Control Specialist preferred for resort and liveaboard work, Divecon for senior roles. Pro number must be active.

Specialty instructor ratings

SSI specialty instructor ratings (Deep, Nitrox, Wreck, Sidemount, Equipment) strengthen the application, particularly for resort and centre-based roles.

Teaching experience

Some shops will hire newly-qualified Open Water Instructors; resorts and liveaboards typically ask for at least one full season of paid SSI teaching.

Languages

English minimum. German is highly valued at many SSI centres given SSI's strong presence in German-speaking markets. French, Spanish and Mandarin also widely useful.

Soft signals

Reliability, calm guest manner on busy dive days, willingness to support sales and shop logistics, and clean student-outcome history.

An SSI-focused CV makes the right impression fast

SSI dive centres scan instructor CVs quickly for active SSI Pro number, current status, dive count and recent paid teaching experience. They want to see specialty instructor ratings and any cross-rating to other agencies (PADI, NAUI, RAID) listed clearly. Generic CV templates bury those details. Our free CV builder is designed for the dive industry, with proper fields for SSI ratings, dive count, languages, references and availability.

Career notes

SSI Pros typically progress through Open Water Instructor → AOWI → Dive Control Specialist → Divecon → Instructor Trainer. Each step opens new role types: OWIs and DCS-level instructors fill the bulk of shop and resort hiring; Divecons and Instructor Trainers lead training centre operations. Many SSI instructors also build careers in technical instruction, liveaboard cruise direction, or dive operations and management.

Common questions

For roles listed under SSI specifically, yes. Your SSI Pro number must be active and in good standing. Many operators verify your status with SSI before offering a contract.

SSI Open Water Instructor (OWI) is the entry point. AOWI or Dive Control Specialist (DCS) is preferred for most resort and liveaboard postings. Specialty instructor ratings strengthen the application.

Crossover ratings are accepted by many SSI operators, particularly if you are willing to teach the SSI curriculum and run SSI student kits. Some centres prefer pure SSI hires; the listing will clarify.

Hiring follows the season. Most operators recruit two to three months before peak. South East Asia liveaboards crew up August to October; Mediterranean operators recruit February to April; year-round operators in places like the Maldives or Egypt hire as gaps appear.

Strongholds include Thailand, Indonesia, the Maldives, Egypt and German-speaking Europe (Germany, Austria, Switzerland). SSI also has strong presence in parts of Latin America. Roles do appear globally, however.

It varies. Some employers sponsor work permits; others expect candidates to arrive with the right to work or to operate on tourist visas where allowed. Each listing on DiveGigs spells out the employer's expectation.

Yes, almost always. SSI instructor roles typically include certified-diver guiding, equipment care, briefings, sales support and dive-shop logistics. Listings detail the full scope.
